Nahim Iqbal, (14) has been selling fruits near the Escorts hospital (south Delhi), for six months now. He left his school and came to Delhi from Uttar Pradesh to sell fruits. He earns around 3,000 rs per month.

In India, though the mall culture has reached new heights but then too the street vendors of the country have managed to save their place. Initially only the grown up men used to wander in the streets to sell things and food items and earn a living. but the Wholesale Price Index had risen above 11% – its highest rate in 13 years. More than a 6% spike over the previous year and almost three times the RBI’s target of 4.1%. Today, the growing inflation rate has even forced children to take up the profession and earn bread and butter for their families. When ideally they should be going to school, they are actually yelling in the streets to sell their products.

This is a nice photo essay with good reporting. It's great to have such strong statistics to help tell the story! Please follow UPI guidelines for photo captions, including who, what, why, where, when and how for each picture to make this a good candidate to get on UPI.com!

Hey Hi Chandrani! actually I lifted these figures from the latest updates of the census website. and I thought they are credible enough.. but if you think there is some problem, I will check again.

The third photo says that the population of Delhi is 14 billion. Are you sure that is correct?
