Life in letters..!

On leisurely afternoons and lonely nights, a lot of us often tend to look at the collection of things from college and school. The ice-cream cups, the chocolate wrappers, the silly notes carrying conversations while classes were going on.The moments spent with friends and special some ones are unforgettable and most cherished. Today technology has surpassed beyond appreciation. Where people in the bygone days used handwritten letters, telegrams and postcards, we have shifted life to the quick pace of e-mails, SMSs, IMs and e-CARDS. The letters and telegrams are long lost especially in those countries that are better developed. However, there still are countries right here that preserve this way of correspondence be it due to habit or a technology mishap.

Whatever the reasons, the hand written form of correspondence has mostly been pushed to oblivion and has become almost an antiquity. Sadly enough it does not even seem to matter to a majority of the population. What we are losing, that electronic means of communication cannot provide us, is better explained by calligraphists worldwide.

What technology gains, calligraphy loses. When going by the handwritten notes, calligraphers read not only the nature but also state of mind while the texts were written. It is shocking to see that the absence of handwritten notes makes difference to an entire field of study.

On the other hand, when it comes to the emotional bonding that human beings share, people of all times agree to the fact that written notes and letters bring the memories back better and afresh when compared to electronic texts. Writings of the dead mean a lot to their families. The tying is better experienced when personally written notes are gone through.

In the recent times with growth of not only technology but also poverty and destitution, new techniques of helping the wretched have come out. A part of it is the auction trend that has made a huge difference to the charitable org industry. Where the houses, clothes and other things are considered precious, the writings like memoirs and correspondence letters of writers, playwrights and others in literature (esp.) make a wonderful part of charitable auctions that fetch money in millions and buy the dreams of billions. Not to forget, the antiquities are not just a subject of appreciation but also business in the 21st century.
Now on the other hand, notes during travel have always been a matter of fascination. The written records of people during their special moments are cherished long after they pass away. Who wouldn’t want the original draft of “Walden” by Henry David Thoreau? Also, travelogues have owned their special space in the hearts of many. The various experiences when penned down leave an amazing feel like “Two in a bush” by Gerald Durrell. Postcards, on the other hand, are the language of common man to express himself to his near and dear.

Not forgetting the joy of finding a full letter box that is more than that of a full mailbox cannot just be put into words. Though the world has quite moved out of the tiny closet of words, there are a few people who cherish the sweet memories and would like to stay back.

This is what people from different parts of the world had to say when asked about their choice of communication.

“I’m sure it will get better -- but a handwritten note or letter is always a treasure, no matter what! Hooray for adventures!” says Anabela

“Letters are the best part of a day!” says blogger Paper Pastries.

On the other side of the globe stays Wasim who feels “Electronic... Obviously, because it’s as good as any of the papers, plus it’s easy to take places. Not to mention saves trees”

This is the same generation of people that has given music, TV and telephone the place of writing. Though every individual gets to choose his kind, I’d humbly suggest that one should never forget the cons that a technology can bring alongside of pros.
