Teksas Bridge ()

Teksas Bridge is the name of the facility at the University of Indonesia (UI) connecting the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Economics. Teksas is the abbreviation of Teknik, Ekonomi, and Sastra. This bridge is located on Mahoni Lake. The idea for the development of this bridge came from a design-making content for architecture students at the Faculty of Engineering at UI. In 2005, UI began plans to develop the bridge.

The reason of developing Teksas Bridge is UI need a facility to connect every faculty. “Every faculty and every student have to be integrated because UI is university and not multiversity”, said Prof. Ida Sundari Husein from Faculty of Humanities. The existence of Teksas Bridge can eliminate dichotomy between faculty of science and faculty of social. The length and width of bridge is 60 meters and 2 meters.

Teksas Bridge has a variety of ornament and it costs one billion and five hundred million rupiah. UI cooperates with private company to build Teksas Bridge, especially in matter of funding. PT. Krakatau Steel was willing to finish the design and make upper part of the bridge. “UI is responsible for making foundation”, said Ir. Setyo Suryadi M.Si as Director of Facility UI at that time. This project become one of the promotion tool for PT Krakatau Steel, because the usage of material and the process of making this bridge are pure from Indonesian people. ”The material for this bridge is exclusive material that never made before, included in Asia”, said Ir. Setyo Suryadi.

Teksas Bridge has been spread out since July 7th 2007. The existence of Teksas Bridge help student to go to other faculty. But it is just for pedestrian and not for motor cycle. There are some regulations to optimize the function of this bridge, such as motor cycle cannot cross this bridge and people are forbidden to catch fish near the bridge.

People can see attractiveness of this bridge from the environment and its design. Student can also learn from Teksas Bridge about design and planning a bridge. Teksas Bridge will become a new icon of University of Indonesia.
