LAGOS, Nigeria, Feb. 22 -- As far as the wife of Ekiti State governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi is concerned, bungling leadership is to blame for the woes of Nigeria.

She took the swipe at “inept leadership” in the country while addressing a cross section of students and the general public at the opening of the 9th Nigerian Undergraduates’ Exhibition of Arts (NUXART) at the Akoka Campus of the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

According to Mrs. Fayemi, enthroning credible leadership remains Nigeria’s biggest challenge. She lamented that it was quite odd that “the best among us get to be ruled by the worst of us.” She said over the years, Nigeria had been ruled by people who become unaccountable to the electorate once they get into office. She said the country deserved better deals.

While affirming that the way out of the current predicament was not just giving young people education or employment, she made an urgent call to those at the rudder of affairs to raise young people of conscience who will rise to steer the nation to great heights.

She showered accolades on the organizers of the exhibition for providing a platform for the expression of what she called positive youthful ideas, and reminded them that they were adding value to our society. This, according to her, could only lead to a kind of society we all would love to live in. She urged the government, corporate bodies and philanthropists to continue to support the kind of ideals NUXART promotes.

She reminded all and sundry that “the key to change for Africa lies in the hands of people, especially young people” thereby justifying the theme of the exhibition “Youth: Catalysts for National Transformation.”

The event, which took place inside Multipurpose Hall ‘B’ of UNILAG also had in attendance former head of interim government, Chief Ernest Shonekan; frontline politician and lawyer, Chief Ayo Adebanjo among others.

The Chairman of the occasion, Barrister Modupe Alakija, who was said to be “unavoidably” absent, sent a cheque of one million naira to support the event.
