Karen Welsh brings more than 27 years of journalism experience to the table.

She is a multi-award winning editor, managing editor, columnist, feature writer, news enterprise reporter, news writing, advertising agency writer, former theatre critic and professional photographer residing in Hilo, Hawai‘i.

Karen won her first journalism award during her first semester as a journalism student at Eastfield College.

She has won a Pa'i Award from the Honolulu Publishers Association for her coverage of the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, a world-renowned hula competition held each spring in Hilo, Hawai'i.

Karen has won two national writing awards in the United States; an Amy Writing Award and the national R.C. Hoiles Award of Excellence (Freedom Communications) for her extensive coverage of Hurricane Floyd in North Carolina in 1999.

Through the years, she has won first place in Sports Feature Writing, Serious Columns, News Enterprise Reporting, News Coverage, and General News Reporting in both the Daily and Community divisions of the North Carolina Press Association. She has also won a Gold Star in the Best Special Section “Who’s Who in Business.”

Presently, Karen spends her time as a freelance writer for advertising agencies, newspapers and journals across the United States. She is an active and ongoing contributing editor to The Carolina Journal, the publishing arm of The John Locke Foundation in Raleigh, North Carolina. She is a professional blogger, and the exclusive writer and photographer for the “Best of East Hawai'i” Reader's Choice Awards in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.

She recently contributed a chapter in the book, “On the Road to Hope,” and wrote the final epilogue for the historical autobiography book entitled “The Memoirs of Henry Obookiah,” which is due out in reprint later this year.

Karen is a Parent Community Networking Center Facilitator at Hilo High School, where she uses the latest in technology to provide a bridge of communication between school and home, sending out newsletters, emails, writing articles and updating the school’s website on a regular basis.

Besides writing, Karen is also a professional photographer. Her work has appeared on DVD, CD and book covers, brochures, and in magazines, newspapers, calendars, websites, journals and television commercials across the United States.
