About Abdi Latif
I am journalism student at the United States International University (USIU), doing a minor in International Relations and a concentration on Print Media.
As for my journalistic interests, there are quite a number of them.
I like to write about issues related to religion, because the media today does not give much coverage to the religious issues; it has become a sensitive issue esp. after 9/11.
I would also like to one day write about and document wars. I think my biggest inspiration in this field is CNN's Christiane Amanpour who always makes great documentaries and tries to bring about the issues clearly and in a competent way. And because the African continent is a war-ravaged continent, I would like to write stories from Congo to Darfur, Somalia and the Delta in Nigeria.
Politics is obviously my biggest journalistic fascination. I read the New York Times (NYT), and the Washington Post continuously for more analysis of American politics; not to forget Time, Newsweek, and NewAfrican magazines every time in order to understand what is going in the world politics.
I also like to watch CNN, BBC, Al-Jazeera (Both English and Arabic), CNBC, and the Voice of America.
Not to be forgotten is Kenya's politics, which is always laden with unsolved corruption and scandal cases (not to ignore the positive side). I read the Daily Nation and the Standard back-to-back; watch KTN, NTV and K24 for political and societal analysis of what is going on in my country.
My interests also cover writing about societal issues like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), HIV-Aids, etc.
They say, 'curiosity kills the cat', and I think that is how I can best describe my interests in journalism.
As long as their is public interest in a story, or even when there is little knowledge about a certain topic, I feel the urge to highlight it and let the public understand and make their own judgments.
I recently started blogging about the crisis in Somalia, and what the international community can do to solve this crisis. You can read it at: www.maandeeqnation.wordpress.com
And I think I will always be grateful to UPIU because they have provided me with a platform to publish all my articles and tell the world about what I think about certain issues and events.
Guys, keep up the good work. You are simply the best!

Very nice writing style, and the story is organized well. It's a great candidate for UPI.com!
Please be careful to follow UPI style -- last names of people are always used on second reference, and honorary titles are virtually never used.
