Two very different debating styles
WASHINGTON, Oct. 16 -- In Wednesday’s final presidential debate between Sens. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and John McCain, R-Ariz., the debating style of the two candidates closely echoed the attitude of their campaigns.
Obama was relaxed as he focused on the issues and answering McCain’s and moderator and CBS News host Bob Schieffer’s questions.
McCain’s style put him on the attack. With less then three weeks to go before Election Day, he’s lagging in the polls and hoped to score a knockout punch.
McCain only hurt himself doing this. As ABC’s George Will put it, McCain fell victim to Obama’s use of “Muhammad Ali’s famed rope-a-dope strategy of sitting back to let his opponent punch himself out.”
When McCain was hitting Obama on the Bill Ayers and ACORN scandals, Obama calmly listened and then told the truth.
Wednesday was arguably McCain’s strongest debate performance. He went on the attack and caused Obama to explain himself on a number of occasions. Regardless, most pundits are still saying that Obama won the debate.
Obama won the debate because of the way he conducted himself. In this time of financial crisis, Americans want a leader who will cool their tensions. Through the debate cycle, Obama has adequately proved that he will do a better job of keeping people calm, and that he will
The way to win undecided voters is to talk about the issues that matter to them, like the economy. Undecided voters care more about learning if they’re going to be able to afford health insurance then about Obama’s past. This election is about the future, not the past.
